BROKEN-WINGED BIRD
The great horned owl broods
in the bird sanctuary, webbed
in with chicken wire, two-by-fours,
sway-backed plastic sheeting.
Scalloped chest-feathers mimic
a backdrop of white birch.
I wonder what flights of fancy
linger behind his golden eyes.
Does this raptor remember
the sight and scent of prey?
Hear the secrecy of wind
riffle his wing feathers?
Feel a heart
thrum in his talons?
Taste the urgency
of blood and bone?
