ON PRESENTING TO MY POETRY GROUP THE BARN OWL LINOCUT I FINISHED THIS WEEK INSTEAD OF WRITING A POEM

Surely they’ll admire
the structure of the print,
the keyblock that shapes
the composition,
zig-zags the branch,
radiates needles,
sets the owl aloft.

I’ve titled it Barn Owl Nocturne
They may feel a rhythm
in spilling pine, sense meter
in wingbeat, catch their breath
at the tonality of moonglow.

The colors—Japanese, juxtaposed
as they are—should add resonance.
White moon. Blue night.
Green pine. Grey feather.
Especially the red chop.

Flexed talons suggest
the owl’s prey. I hope
poets note the symbolism—
omen from the spirit world.
It’s all about death,
isn’t it?
