BEASTS
"The hardest thing in the world is simplicity. And the most fearful thing, too. You have to strip yourself of all your disguises, some of which you didn’t know you had. You want to write a sentence as clean as a bone. That is the goal."
– James Baldwin

AFTER A NIGHT OF RAIN
A young doe pauses with me
in City Park, close enough
to hear soft undertones.
Too young and curious to be afraid,
her ears pricked, tail twitching,
coat wet from rain.
We breathe in the stillness
between us, hold each other
across the great divide,
animal to animal, until
she stamps a slender hoof,
and takes me with her
in one elegant bound.
