signals your approach
to Lake St. George,
and you descend—
shallow wing-beats,
neck stretched,
feet trailing—
altitude, trajectory, flight path
coalesce,
wings fix into glide,
feet touch down, send up
twin spumes behind
your flat-belly landing
and you skim,
to a dazzling stop,
head lifted,
black-and-white
striped collar,
checkerboard back,
and I can’t catch up
with my heartbeat.
