The first loon calls from Belfast Bay
after the dark season of silence.
His thin wail rises from the water,
bisects the rocky shore, traverses the street,
crescendos at my house. Where are yooooou?
he asks. Where are yooooou?
He has molted out of gray winter garb,
shimmied into prenuptial finery–elegant
in black & white, eyes gleaming red
in the gloaming. He throws back
his head, opens his throat,
releases his longing—
unwavering urgent.
