Election Day
November 3, 2020
Like a candelabra
in bare maple boughs,
a flock of evening grosbeaks
visits our feeder.
Splinter-yellow against
a grey November sky,
each bird waits its turn,
as we await tallies.
Each descends to feast
on black sunflower seeds,
jostles for purchase,
flutters others away,
till a gust of hope spins
our rare guests aloft
to wheel and bank south
towards Georgia.
